Because it lacks the constant activity of Waikiki and Honolulu, Hawai’i Kai has a more laid-back, enjoy-the-day lifestyle. You’ll find standard American fare, exotic flavors from all over the world, and traditional Polynesian cuisine here, too.
The Hawai’i Kai Shopping Center and the Hawai’i Kai Towne Center are the two major shopping thoroughfares in town. Many residents venture into nearby Honolulu for their high-end boutiques, as well.
Entertainment in Hawai’i Kai
Hawai’i Kai isn’t known for the busy nightlife of Waikiki, but there are many places to get out and have fun with family and friends in this beautiful area. The Koko Marina 8 movie theater, the Hawai’i Kai Golf Course and our local dog park are favorites among residents, as is the Sea Life Park (where parts of the movie 50 First Dates was filmed) near Makapu’u Point.
Hawai’i Kai Parks and Recreation
Hawai’i Kai is home to the incredibly popular Haunama Bay and Sandy Beach, and plenty of residents enjoy flying kites with our breathtaking mountains as a backdrop. Hawai’i Kai is also home to Koko Marina, the Makapu’u Lighthouse (a wonderful hike, if you’re up for it) and the Koko Crater Botanical Garden. A remarkable lava tube near Sandy Beach provides a great show and geological lesson, because it serves as a blowhole when the tides come in, and it’s close to the breathtaking windward coast. This area is a hotspot for snorkeling and whale-watching, which makes it a wonderful place to spend time outdoors enjoying the real beauty that Hawai’i has to offer.
