About Kailua Hawaii
Backed by breathtakingly beautiful mountains and home to one of the state’s best beaches, Kailua is a 10.6-square-mile census-designated place on the windward coast. It lies just over Nu’uanu Pali, 12 miles northeast of Honolulu, and has a population of nearly 53,000 people.
Kailua is made up primarily of residential communities but features a small commercial area along Kailua road, where residents can dine and shop. Lanikai is also part of Kailua, which is one of the most prestigious communities in the state, and the area also encompasses Mokapu Peninsula.

Children who live in Kailua are part of the Kailua-Kalaheo Complex area of the Hawaii State Department of Education’s Windward District.

Kailua Intermediate School is for students in grades 7 and 8, while Kalaheo and Kailua High Schools are open to those in grades 9 through 12.
Kailua Shopping and Dining
From the Kalapawai Café to the cozy Baci Bistro, you’ll find all kinds of delicious food in Kailua. There’s a string of restaurants to suit every palate here. Many residents also travel to Kaneohe, where there are even more dining options (including a Koa Pancake House).
With a Whole foods Market, several department stores and a handful of grocery stores, there are plenty of ways to shop in Kailua. The Aikahi Park Shopping Center, Kailua Town Center and Enchanted Lake Center are brimming with shops as well.
Entertainment in Kailua
Aside from the gorgeous, clear waters at Lanikai Beach and Kailua Beach Park, there are remarkable hiking trails and plenty of beautiful outdoor activities. Maunawili Falls, the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club and the Kawai Nui Marsh, where birdwatching is extremely popular (just be careful not to disturb anything, because endangered shearwaters make their nests there) are great places to spend the day.
There’s a small theater, the Water Gardens Keolu 4, right in Kailua. However, many people who live here also enjoy the theater in Kaneohe. We’re just over 20 minutes from Honolulu and Waikiki, as well, which is just on the other side of the mountains; there’s enough to do and see there to last a lifetime.
Kailua Parks and Recreation
The Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation maintains four gorgeous parks in Kailua, including:
- Aikahi Community Park
- Enchanted Lake Community Park
- Kailua District Park
- Kalama Beach Park
There’s also a public pool maintained by the Parks and Recreation department; it’s located on South Kainalu Drive, and all residents are welcome.
In addition to these spectacular parks and pools, the department is also in charge of offering free and discounted classes to Kailua residents ranging from swimming classes to ballroom dancing. There are organized sports teams for children and adults, as well, including baseball, soccer and more.
