Long known for its spectacular white-sand beaches, proximity to Diamond Head crater and world-class shopping, Waikiki is a wonderful place to call home. Because of its location within Honolulu, on the southern shores of O’ahu, it’s considered one of the world’s premier vacation destinations – but there’s so much more to it than tourism. Kama’aina, or locals, find that it’s a wonderful place to live; you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who isn’t completely in love with the perfect climate, the convenient location near H1, and the friendly longtime residents.

Children who live in Waikiki attend schools in the Farrington Complex. The only public school located right in Waikiki is the President Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, which serves children from kindergarten through Grade 5. Washington Middle School and Kaimuki High School serve those living right in Waikiki. In some instances, kids might also attend schools in Honolulu, such as Ala Wai Elementary and Waikiki Elementary, which is just outside the border of Waikiki at Kapahulu Avenue.
Waikiki Dining and Shopping
Tourists from all over the world rave about Waikiki dining and shopping, and it’s no wonder: the main thoroughfare, Kalakaua Avenue, is packed with popular chain restaurants and five-star dining experiences, as well as dozens of high-end retail boutiques.
From Wolfgang’s Steakhouse and Duke’s Canoe Club (genuinely one of the best restaurants on the island) to fast food and cozy diners, Waikiki has something for everyone. Teddy’s Bigger Burgers is a popular hotspot on the edge of Waikiki, near the Honolulu Zoo, and you’ll find plenty of low-calorie, healthy options dotted throughout our streets.
You’ll also find Tiffany & Co., Coach, and Yves Saint Laurent shops, as well as ABC convenience stores on nearly every block in Waikiki. More than 100 shops and restaurants are located in the heart of Waikiki, in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center and in the International Marketplace, as well.
Entertainment in Waikiki
During the day, you’ll see locals and tourists sunning on the breathtakingly white sand of Waikiki Beach. Volleyball games with the gently lapping waves in the background are always a hit, and Duke’s OceanFest is an incredible event that takes place every August; longboard surfing, paddleboard racing and so much more make the OceanFest a must-attend activity for kama’aina.
The streets of Waikiki come alive when the sun goes down. Street performers, nightclubs and local artisans creating keepsakes are always popular attractions, but there’s so much more. Traveling just outside of Waikiki lands you in the rest of Honolulu, which is home to fantastic movie theaters, the Aloha Stadium and unbelievable historic places, such as Pearl Harbor, ‘Iolani Palace and Ali’iolani Hale.
Parks and Recreation in Waikiki
Waikiki is home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, but there are many Honolulu parks and recreational areas that are extremely popular among residents. Unbelievable hikes with breathtaking views, including several classified as easy, medium and hard, dot the landscape. Nearby Diamond Head crater is a popular hike for those with limited ability, while Makapuu Ridge in nearby Hawaii Kai is for experts.
Community pools, playgrounds and parks are all over Waikiki and Honolulu, which means it’s an excellent place to spend time enjoying the fresh ocean breezes and spectacular year-round weather.
